When Dan first popped into the Fundraising Office earlier this year he told us about his Dad who was due to have major heart surgery at St George’s and how well he and the rest of their family were being treated by the staff caring for him. Dan was very keen to give something back to the Hospital, but particularly to the heart unit that had helped his Dad get better and asked us what he could do.

We were a bit shocked when Dan admitted that he liked to run half marathons “for fun” but we quickly recovered and suggested a running event might be up his street! It was clear that he was keen to take on the London Marathon and considering his love of running he knew that he would find it manageable.  To show his commitment to raising awareness and funds for St George’s and to ensure he kept his fitness going Dan has since signed up to several half marathons taking place throughout the next few months.

Most of our supporters have a very personal connection to St George’s because our staff and Hospital facilities have made a big difference to them. Dan told him why it was important for him to lend his support:

“When my father was diagnosed with having 2 heart attacks earlier in the year everything just stopped for our family. He was admitted to St Georges and had a triple bypass operation only seven days after his first appointment. The staff were amazing and explained everything to us, exuding professionalism and confidence.

“My father has made an amazing recovery and I really wanted to do something to help out the heart unit.
I enjoy running and wanted to somehow raise some funds. As soon as I found out about marathon places for St Georges I signed up to Basingstoke and Windsor half marathons and Luton marathon as a warm up for a possible future place at the London Marathon. It has been an honour to wear the St Georges t shirt with pride while running the half marathons over the past few weeks. The more exposure this amazing hospital gets the more patients can be treated in the future.”
